How It Works
What is VA Compensation And How Does It Work?
VA compensation is the disability income program offered to veterans through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. VA disability compensation provides a monthly tax-free payment to veterans who became sick or injured during their military service or whose service worsened an existing condition.
Here are key points about VA disability pay:
Eligibility
- Veterans with physical conditions (such as chronic illnesses or injuries) and mental health conditions (like post-traumatic stress disorder) that developed before, during, or after service may qualify.
- It covers both service-connected disabilities (those caused or aggravated by military service) and presumptive disabilities (conditions presumed to be related
to service).
Disability Ratings
- The VA assigns a disability rating based on the severity of your service-connected condition.
- VA ratings range from 10% to 100% in increments of 10%. The higher the rating, the greater the compensation.
- The rating determines the amount of monthly compensation you receive.
